YOU ARE YOUR OWN LIMITATION

25 Feb

only-limitation
It’s become quite a concern for me when I see young individuals frustrated by their present or prevailing status and feel helpless. Furthermore I am taken aback at the array of excuses often given for their inability to actualize their aspirations. I happen to be more concerned with the younger generation because this happens to be where I belong, and I also understand that the advancement of our nation rests on this niche of individuals getting it right personally first, even with the limiting environment and challenging circumstances they find themselves.
It’s important you realize that in life there is a limit to what you can control or influence. The sailor or captain at sea has no control over the wind or sea currents, but that’s no excuse for him not to sail the ship to its destination. Thus instead of seeing the sea currents and wind as a disadvantage he focuses on how to use it to his advantage by adjusting his sails and bailing water from the ship (if need be). In like manner the state of the government may not improve at the rate you desire, you may never land that high paying “job” you desire, the nation’s economy may not improve much in the next decade, the rate of unemployment may just increase rather than decrease, uninterrupted electricity supply may still be an illusion, you may not have that influential uncle to give you the big help you need . . . I dare to say, however varied your excuses are they are not just enough, because time and time again people have challenged their circumstances and taken responsibility for their own life and success, today we look up to a number of them as icons. Dear reader the only one thing you have total control over is yourself and that’s the most important ingredient required for your journey towards consistent success.
I have a series of questions I did like to pose before you:
a. Do you have a vision for your life?
b. What steps are you taking to realize that vision?
c. What’s the biggest challenge towards reaching your goal/vision? Have you deliberately taken time out to think creatively on how to overcome this challenge (most of us are very good at talking but not at productive brain storming.)
d. Are you proactive?
e. What’s your believe system, what’s your world view? Do you really believe you can reach you vision no matter the odds (your dominant thoughts / believes, controls / shapes your realities.)
f. What are your dominant habits? Would they take you to where you desire to be?
Essentially, my point is that you take responsibility for your life, it’s your life. Nobody is interested in the excuses you are ready to provide for not reaching your peak, rather anyone would want to know how you succeeded with all the challenges you experienced.
This by no means is a conclusive piece but just a primer aimed at redirecting your thinking to the fact that you are the most critical piece in the puzzle for the realization of your success. A rapid realization of this truth is a sail set in the right direction.
Please share if you found this piece helpful.

It Depends On You

29 Aug

Its being a while I penned on this vast space allotted to me by wordpress, however I am happy to be back doing something I really love; Writing. Now this is a new category I set up on my blog specifically to inspire you, I trust it would. Do have a delightful read with my first content in a while, and please don’t forget to leave your thoughts and suggestions dear. Love you Loads.

IT DEPENDS ON YOU

No more effort is required to aim high in life, to demand abundance and prosperity, than is required to accept misery and poverty. A great poet has correctly stated this universal truth through these lines.

“I bargained with Life for a penny,
And Life would pay no more,
However I begged at evening
When I counted my scanty store.

For Life is a just employer,
He gives you what you ask,
But once you have set the wages,
Why, you must bear the task.

I worked for a menial’s hire,
Only to learn, dismayed,
That any wage I had asked of Life,
Life would have willingly paid.”

THE IMPACT OF LOVE

13 Feb

LOVE: A transitive and intransitive verb feel tender affection for somebody: to feel tender affection for somebody such as a close relative or friend, or for something such as a place, an ideal, or an animal.

It’s that special season again, when love is the recurring word in the air waves, a lot of actions are being taken during this season to profess love or show affection to that special person. We go to great lengths to prove our love for our partners, we buy; flowers, expensive gifts, go to luxurious restaurants, we are often in our best behaviors on this special day just so we could win Him or Her over. Am not really interested in the essence of the day as much as the actions that occur on this day, because I would like to bring to bear our colossal ignorance which could be corrected, if we decide to take action.

In our above definition, it’s obvious that love is not limited to persons, things or animals but also comprises places and ideals. My argument today is this do we really LOVE our present state as a nation, or society or community, because if we don’t then no wonder we remain in our present state as a national entity. Loving our nation or community does not exclusively mean being loud with your intelligent or flawed criticisms, but also includes valuable contributions to the balance and advancement of society by our deliberate actions to do, not just our best but what is required per time. I can’t go around, throwing dirt around, beating traffic, cutting corners in my office, evading my taxes etc. and claim to want what’s best for my nation because I understand that my actions as a unit affects the whole, I literally have no moral justification to judge the government, as I am a part of the problem.

The reality of our situation as a national entity is that we have a flawed leadership, however you who claim to have the interest of the nation at heart, what are you doing within your small circle of influence to make things better? Guys we must understand that the leader comes from amongst the people, and the leader is only a shadow of the society he/she stems from. Do we want good leaders? Let’s work on ourselves and families, let’s adopt noble standards and ideals in our communities. The solution to our problem is not as difficult as it seems if we all decide to take deliberate steps towards positive change.

The question once again is; DO YOU LOVE OUR PRESENT STATE? If no what has your consistent contributions been to the balance and advancement of our society. LOVE is an action word, don’t just say you love, do something to prove it;
-Take up a project in your neighborhood
-Start up a campaign against -indiscriminate waste disposal in your neighborhood.
-Enlighten your circle of influence on the -importance of Independence from over dependence on government for sustenance on the long term.

Just do something, it must not be large and mighty but ensure it’s impactful. This is the only way by which you can prove your LOVE.

The impact of Love is Phenomenal, love makes us;
-Give our best
-Care
-Sacrifice (Giving more than our best)
-Look beyond our faults to reach a compromise
-Look beyond our own interests. Etc.

Happy Valentine’s Day Friends (Ensure to Show Him /Her Love, also remember our beloved Nation; let’s show her love Daily, that’s our only guarantee for transformation)

Please am eager to hear your comments and criticisms or opinions: more importantly please take action.

CORRUPTION: THE IMPACT OR ROLE OF THE UNIT

23 Jan

CORRUPTION: THE IMPACT OR ROLE OF THE UNIT
I live in a country where the term corruption could easily be mistaken for an individual or a group’s name. Every single person from old to young just blames Mr. or Mrs. Corruption for every form of irregularity within the system in the geographical location called Nigeria where I reside. Over time I have come to get used to the term corruption being used everywhere from bus parks to schools, from corporate organizations to government agencies and even religious organizations, you would almost begin to wonder if this corruption is a ghost or spirit being, since no one seems to take the responsibility of being called corrupt or better still corruption. Little wonder we are still where we are.
However am not in the habit of just problem analysis (which is important to proffering solution) as the average Nigerian is a master of such an art, rather in the face of problems I try to think of sustainable and pragmatic solutions which are often mistaken for an idealistic thought pattern, well it’s just my own thought and opinion. If we all start proffering solutions and stop arguing we would move forward.
It’s no longer news that the activity or actions of the unit affects the collective, so it is safe to say that the accumulation of all our individual actions is the picture we see in our communities, societies and by default our nation today. It’s quite easy and convenient to blame Mr. A or Mr. B or the government for whatever state you find yourselve, it seems logical and easy right? How nice. Now before I proceed, it’s important we find out how corruption is defined. Well before the word became synonymous with just Government officials, the word was originally translated to mean “extremely immoral or depraved”. With this definition in mind, do you see how you are implicated in our present state as a nation? Let me elucidate more explicitly;
Each time you throw things out of your car or home improperly; your corrupt.
Each time you beat the traffic light; you’re corrupt.
Each time you sponsor exam malpractice for your kids, niece, nephew etc.; you’re corrupt.
Each time you refuse to pay your bills e.g PHCN, Waste Bills, etc ;your corrupt
Whenever you refuse to vote; you indirectly contribute to corruption in governance.
When you take bribe; you’re corrupt.
When you allow your kids get away with little acts of mischief without rebuke; you’re helping raise a new generation of corrupt individuals.
The list is indefinite…
You see our problem is that we think corruption is only when you give bribe or steal money, forgetting that before that man started stealing money he or she had at one point stolen meat from the pot, or taken daddy’s money or just been plain exposed to high level mischief in the family of environment without ever been rebuked or corrected. How do we then expect a different picture than we see daily? There can be no change nationally or in governance until a majority of us take responsibility as individuals to deliberately become positively transformed. We must understand that systems are run by people; the best of systems in the hand of a fool is a foolish system.
If we all knew that at some point in our history that a young boy without shoes in Otuoke in Bayelsa state will become our president would we have spent some more time preparing him and his peers and ensuring that the right environment is put in place to properly expose him?!! The list just goes on and on. My dear friends my point is simply this; take responsibility of your actions, you just do what is right and preach the same message, we would be shocked at the visible change we would see within a short frame of time. Change is very predictable, especially with the right actions in place. Ofcourse the system is terribly gone wrong, but I don’t see how complaining, nagging, backbiting or just doing nothing would contribute to the balance we seek in our society.
Well I hope I made some sence today, guys our future is in our hands. Let the change begin with me and you and things would naturally fall into place, this is my humble submission.

Building Effective Organizations That Transform Societies

16 Jan

Building Effective Organizations That Transform Societies

I have become a strong proponent of the fact that “the activities or actions of the unit affect the collective” and this was the premise on which last week’s issue (Beyond Me) was discussed.
Today I would like to take on another issue tagged “Building effective organizations that transform society”, based on the following premise;
The quantity of yeast does not need to be same with that of flour for it to liven the whole dough. Thus we don’t have to be very plenty to initiate change, if we have a strong will and develop enough capacity and form the right allies, we would be shocked at what we could achieve.
In this Issue, when I talk about organizations I do not refer to our fortune 500 companies of profit driven organizations (same principles might apply though). Rather I make reference to little community initiatives, clubs, NGO’s or team projects born out of a genuine desire to break the status quo and contribute positive values to society.
How are such organizations formed?
First a person who just can’t stand the present state of things gets burdened, e.g. the mass failure of math and English by high school students in National or Regional board exams, the pile of rubbish at street corners or junctions, the number of street kids roaming the streets in your neighborhood. (We all have something to offer if we put our hearts and head to it).
The Individual births a vision (the picture of a preferred future).
He/ She takes initiative and starts to do something with the limited resources he/she has.
As you engage the problem, you get creative and more passionate.
NOTE YOU CANT JUST DO IT ALL ON YOUR OWN GET OTHER ALLIES!! Recruit potent allies not more than 3 or 4 for a start.
Your allies are usually close associates who are passionate about same things and are also thinking for solution.
Note: At this point no formal organization has yet been formed but progress is been made.
You and your allies pull more resources together; hence more work can be done.
Over time a need arises to enlarge capacity, thus you need to get, more people involved (Human capital resource).
At this point it becomes important to formalize your little group by giving it a name, having an organizational structure.
Your group could metamorphose into a CLUB, an NGO, a GROUP INITIATIVE, a TEAM PROJECT e.t.c.
Giving it a name and a formal structure, helps people identify with you and your groups work and even possibly contribute to its vision.
Note: An organization is now being formed, it’s no longer a pet project others are now involved.
How do we remain effective?
More people in your organization especially one with a nonprofit initiative has its band wagon of challenges. Thus it’s important you and your allies who are the vision carriers increase your leadership and human relations capacity and skills.
The effectiveness of your organization at this level depends on how well you can organize your troops to achieve your collective goal. This requires skill not just passion, good leadership skills.
Also lots training would be required for new volunteers of your organization. This is important so they can understand the organizations vision, mission, core values and also your organizations philosophy.
If you have a team of 500 volunteers with 80-90% poorly trained or not trained, your effectiveness would be grossly marred. However the reverse is the case if your volunteers are effectively trained and they understand clearly your organizations vision, mission, core values and organization philosophy.
Note: At this level you’re on point and you already have an organization contributing to society, however little.
Issues or questions that burst the bubble
But wait a minute; I have passion, but no money how do I start?
Ehmm how do I ensure continuity?
Ok what about funding to ensure morale is kept high and projects are executed?
Ok let the Answering begin… Lol
For the first question the truth is that we all often start we nothing in terms of cash, but we have ourselves to offer, my counsel is start small, build a staying power, influence and trust.
Also if you’re really passionate as you claim you would do even odd jobs to raise some funds.(there are no easy ways out)
As for the second question, it’s important that from the onset, you do not build the whole organization around you, develop a succession plan so the whole vision does not die when you die or retire or just want to move on.
Do not be insecure, get others involved and carry your core along, who knows tomorrow…
Now for the third question I personally do not like begging for money (sourcing for sponsorship) so I get creative and build businesses whose main purpose is to fund some of such projects, I develop my allies to think and do same, hence we ensure a continual flow of income, other ways to ensure income flow includes levying of members, sourcing for sponsorship, having fund raising events etc. None of the fore said is easy, looking for sponsors is the toughest. My advice, develop your entrepreneurial skills and become your own primary sponsor. It is however also possible to turn your nonprofit into a for profit with a social drive though, that’s called a social enterprise (topic for another day)
Having said all this, it is important we understand that we can contribute to the balance of society, we are the government, also we do not need to do everything, we only need to do something, and if we all can do something as groups or individuals, we would have a much better society.
Please do not be a lone ranger, there is little you can achieve alone, network with like minds
Don’t start big, start small but keep the big picture in mind, take it one day at a time.
I would love to hear your testimonies soon. We can make our country great a person at a time, a problem solved at a time.
… Become an asset to our nation, contribute positive values to society.
God bless you.
Hey please leave a comment, am so waiting to hear from you. We can also share ideas on twitter follow NOW!!! @okolieken. Love u.

BEYOND ME
Is it possible your individual actions have more far reaching effects on others than just you? If your answer to that question happens to be a yes then you’re welcome to this week’s discuss on #TheCatalyst tagged Beyond Me.
Am a firm believer in the saying that the actions of the unit affects the collective. The effect of our individual actions when pulled together is the picture we see daily in our family, societies and nation. This understanding has acted as a thermostat for my actions and decision-making, because I aim to contribute positive values in my society. Examples abound on how your singular action can result in a colossal destructive or constructive end.
A singular decision to drink and drive makes you a hazard not just to yourself but to other road users, now imagine if 30% of road users drink and drive on a particular day.
A singular decision to be dishonest in business transactions over time by several independent individuals can spell doom for anyone that belongs to that same race, tribe or religion.
A singular independent decision by several adults to lie before their young wards could breed a society where honesty is as water in the Sahara.
In a bid to keep this discuss as simple as possible I hope my point has not been lost. It’s important that each and every one of us understand that we contribute to the decadence or decency in society. I believe that if we can grasp the wisdom in this days issue and brood over it and seek ways to apply it, then we can truly say change is on the way.
I am a firm believer in the positive transformation of our country but not without the commitment of each citizen to personal transformation. Let the change begin with you; understand that our singular actions when pulled together has a greater far reaching effect than we could ever imagine.
God bless you as you begin the beyond me campaign.
